Post by Jenni Pagett, Publicity Officer.

The latest in my group visits was to the Further French Group. The day I visited they had a theme of India. There was a quiz about India, in French, of course, and then they were reading from a French text book, also about India. Group members took it in turns to read a passage from the book and then translate it, with help from the other members when needed. Everyone in the group contributes to providing and presenting the material for the weekly sessions. There is no formal language teaching in this group, but hope to progress by using the language rather than learning it.
The aim of the group is to create opportunities to read, hear and speak French. They operate on the principle of “use it or lose it”. This helps to build confidence to use French in new situations.
The group welcome a range of abilities; however, it is not suitable for complete beginners. But even if you have only a modest familiarity with French this is for you. It doesn’t matter how good you are or if you don’t understand everything that is said. Participating will help you move forward.
Friendly and cheerful members, create a welcoming environment to practice your French. The group all take their own refreshments and take a break around the mid-point of the session to relax, before starting again. Speaking in French during the break is encouraged. The group meets weekly on a Wednesday from 10am to 11.30 at the Christchurch Centre.
If you are interested in joining this group please contact the group leader via the website. Further French
Membership costs just £50 per year and this allows you to attend as many groups as you like. That equates to less than £1 per week*.
