Spam Email
We sometimes receive Emails in our Junk or Spam folders that are obviously fake, but we can also sometimes receive what appears to be a genuine Email from companies, friends or fellow u3a members.
How can you tell if emails are genuine and what should you do?
National Cyber Security Centre How to Spot Scam Emails, etc... gives advice on the key things to look for in fake communications. You can also add the WhatsApp Ask Silver Tool into your WhatsApp and paste a screenshot of the email into it to get feedback.
- If the sender is someone you recognise and the message looks suspicious then this can be someone pretending to be them, hiding their real Email address, called Spoofing. How to ID Email Spoofing
- It could be that the senders account has been "hacked" and the message is phishing for your details.
- In both cases, DO NOT REPLY OR CLICK ANY LINKS, contact the sender via phone or another method.
- If you think your email account has been compromised then immediately change your passwords for that account and in Apps that use that account.
- If you think this is from a Stone u3a member then you can forward a copy to webmanager@stoneu3a.net
