How to Create, Use, & Print QR Codes Safely

  1. Everyday Use – Scanning and Sharing QR Codes
  • A QR code is a 2 dimensional bar code.
The QR code on the left is for the Stone u3a website.
  • Use your smartphone’s built-in camera app (iPhone or Android) to scan — Otherwise download a third-party scanner.
  • Before scanning, make sure the QR code looks legitimate (Avoid scanning codes in public places that seem tampered with or pasted over official posters)
  • When scanned, before tapping, preview the website or action
Never enter passwords or payment info unless 100% sure of the source.
  • You can create safe personal QR codes using trusted sites like
    qr-code-generator.com or qrstuff.com.
  • When sharing a QR code, ensure it points to a secure (HTTPS) link.
  1. Design and Print Use – Creating and Displaying QR Codes
  • Always test your QR code before printing — scan it from multiple devices and distances.
  • Use a minimum size of 2 x 2 cm (0.8 x 0.8 in) for short links; larger for long URLs.
  • Keep at least 1/8 inch (3 mm) of white space around the QR code (‘quiet zone’) so scanners can read it easily.
  • Ensure strong contrast: dark code on light background (avoid red-on-black or similar).
  • For printed materials, place the code where it’s easy to reach and scan — not near folds, corners, or shiny areas.
  • Use short URLs (web address) or a URL shortener before generating your QR code to improve scanning reliability.
  • If branding your QR code with a logo, test thoroughly to ensure readability.
  1. Quick Safety Tips
  • Only scan QR codes from sources you trust.
  • Be cautious with QR codes that promise prizes, deliveries, or payments.
  • If you get an email or message with a QR code, verify the sender first.
  • Regularly update your phone’s operating system and browser to block malicious sites.
