Post by Jenni Pagett, Publicity Officer.
This time in the spotlight series I went to visit the Cryptic Crossword Group.
If, like me, you look at crosswords in newspapers or booklets and think “I wish I could do this” but know that you’ll get stuck part way through, this may be group for you!
Led by the very knowledgeable Gwynyth, this group gives you the tools you would need to do cryptic crosswords. Members are given a sheet each week which explains one or more of the twelve rules to deciphering cryptic crossword clues. Gwynyth explains the definitions and indicators within the rule and allows members to work through a few examples on their own, with a guiding hand available where needed. I’m told that it helps to have both a logical and laterally thinking brain.
The group members are friendly and help each other along the way. Last year’s group enjoyed it so much that they have continued to meet up as friends.
At the time of writing the group are half way through the rules, but that doesn’t mean you can’t join in, although some experience of doing cryptic crosswords would be an advantage. If sufficient people would like to start from the beginning it’s possible that a new group could be arranged from October this year.
If you would like more information about the group, please contact the group leader via the website.
