Originally developed as a martial art for self-defence in 13th Century China, Tai Chi is predominantly practised around the world as a health-promoting exercise. Tai Chi, also known as Tai Chi Chuan, is a combination of relaxation with slow and gentle movements. There are a variety of styles such as Yang, Chen and Wu. The main differences between the Tai Chi styles are in the speed of movement and the way the body holds the postures.

The form of Tai Chi we practise here is the Moy style Yang Long Form. Moy style has an extra degree of stretching and turning in each movement, placing the emphasis on health improvement, although we go only to the body's limit without any strain. Studies have shown that Tai Chi can help in promoting health and well-being, improving circulation and balance, increasing strength and general mobility, reducing stress and anxiety.

Tai Chi is a low-impact form of exercise, meaning that it won't put much stress on your bones and joints, making it a safe and suitable activity for all ages and abilities. If you have any health concerns or an existing medical condition it is recommended that you seek advice from your GP before starting Tai Chi.

The group starts with a session for beginners then continues with a session for experienced members.
