In today’s fast paced and urgent world it can be difficult to find time for hobbies and interests. It can seem indulgent to set aside a couple of hours to do something for yourself, but it’s essential for good mental health.
Our friendly Chess Group is an excellent place to give yourself that touch of peace and quiet and to keep your mind active at the same time. Even if you have never played chess before, you can come along and receive some tuition on the game. You can improve your game by playing against other group members of different levels, from beginners to those who take the game seriously. Chess provides the opportunity to become calm and unwind as well as the learning strategy.
According to one source, chess has a rich history spanning over 1,500 years, originating from the ancient Indian game of chaturanga and evolving through various cultures into the modern game we know today. The term "chaturanga" translates to "four divisions of the military," reflecting the game's representation of infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariots. Chess's long and storied history reflects its enduring appeal and the strategic depth that has captivated players across cultures and generations.
The Chess Group meets each Wednesday at The Star Public House, in the Spitfire Room, 21 Stafford Street, Stone at 2pm until 4pm. They are a very welcoming group.
If you are interested the Chess Group or any of our groups, or would like to volunteer to run a group yourself, please take a look at our website.
