Spotlight on…..Scrabble

Post by Jenni Pagett, Publicity Officer.

I received a warm welcome from the Scrabble Group this week, when I went to visit them at Broomfield Court.

Do you think Scrabble is only a game to be played on cold, wet, boring Sunday afternoons?   Well think again!

The Scrabble group are a lovely bunch who make the game fun and social.  Multiple games are played at the same time.  They play traditional Scrabble but in a relaxed and informal way.  Each table plays two games each session with refreshments in between.  The first table to finish the first game make the drinks for everyone, and the table that finishes the second game first start the washing up, and everyone joins in when they can.  When I asked the players why they joined the group there was a common theme of making friends, good company and mental stimulation.

Broomfield Court provides an excellent location.  The group plays in the resident’s lounge, but you don’t need to be a resident to join.  There is plenty of space for the group to expand and new members will be encouraged.  You don’t need to be a Scrabble genius, as anyone from beginners to more experienced players are equally welcome.  You can even bring your dictionary with you!

The group meets every Thursday from 10am until 12.00 noon. If you are interested in joining the group or would like more information, please contact the group leader via our website. https://stone.u3asite.uk/u3a_groups/scrabble/
